SUMMARY:Yoga Teach-In: Interrupting Omwashing and Zionism’s Weaponization of Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Register on Eventbrite. \nThis Yoga Teach-In calls on yoga teachers and practitioners to deepen their awareness of and solidarity with Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation and the genocide in Gaza by anchoring their yoga practice in a call for a ceasefire and an end to settler colonial apartheid. \nThe workshop has a 3-fold purpose. Attendees can expect to: \n1) Deepen awareness of how Zionism and far-right military and law enforcement institutions around the globe weaponize yoga to advance ethnonational and colonial agendas against the Palestinian people; \n2) Learn how yoga studios and practitioners\, including those who call for “peace & love” and neutrality\, are complicit in using yoga to normalize colonization and participate in spiritual bypassing; and \n3) Strategize on how yogis and yoga communities can take action and build long-haul resilience to interrupt Zionism and “omwashing;” and organize our yoga practice in solidarity with Palestinian resistance and freedom.

SUMMARY:Qusas Min Wara Al Jidar
DESCRIPTION:Register on Eventbrite. \nFor Qusas Min Wara Al Jidar\, Aya was initially going to create a piece based on the interviews which accompany the images in La La Lil Jidar. After October 7th\, Aya felt it important to respond to the current moment in her work. This piece now consists of interviews with Palestinians living in and around Philly\, and is a digestion of how the genocide echoes in our bodies. \nAbout Aya Razzaz \nAya Razzaz is a Palestinian performance artist and dancer based in Philadelphia. As a diasporic Palestinian Aya believes there is no lack of stories embedded in her body and she has always used the stage as a method of sharing them. Aya has performed around the country as a dancer\, director and burlesque artist. There are multiple teachers and programs to whom she owes her passion for the stage including Headlong Performance Institute and the Philadelphia Burlesque Academy. Performing is a way for Aya to both escape and be increasingly present in the world around her\, she hopes you experience this too.

SUMMARY:Behind La La Lil Jidar: A History of this Photography Archive
DESCRIPTION:Register on Eventbrite. \n  \nPlease join us on Wednesday\, January 17\, 7-9pm pm for an artist talk with Aisha Mershani in conjunction with their exhibition La La Lil Jidar: 20 Years Behind the Apartheid Wall in Palestine\, currently on view at Studio 34. \nAisha Mershani’s (they/them) photography focuses on the Israel Apartheid Wall\, visually exposing the realities on the ground in Palestine\, reframing the source of violence. For nearly 20 years Mershani has photographed military checkpoints\, popular demonstrations\, house demolitions\, destroyed villages\, and the daily lives of Palestinians living under the violence of the Israeli Apartheid. Most recently\, in 2022\, Mershani returned to the Occupied West\nBank\, finding countless people that were photographed in 2004/2005 to photograph them again\, showing time behind the Wall. \nMershani’s photographs have been exhibited in numerous galleries\, multiple publications\, as well as many internet news sites over the years to further the awareness of the ongoing situation on the ground in Palestine. They are also one of the artists in the reference book\, “Encyclopedia of Arab American Artists”. \nAisha Mershani was born in Las Vegas\, Nevada to an American Jewish mother and a Moroccan Muslim father. Mershani holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Redlands in California\, and a Master’s and a Ph.D. degree from the UNESCO program in Peace\, Development Studies\, and Conflict Transformation at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón de la Plana\, Spain. \nTheir work comes from a place of concern about the injustices occurring in the Middle East\, and a commitment to artistically expose these injustices and educate those outside of the region. For Mershani it is vital to view Palestine/Israel beyond US mainstream news framing. The expression of everyday life is the primary objective of their documentary photographic work. \namershani.com
